The Power of a Cristo Rey Education

Freshman year is where futures begin.

At Cristo Rey De La Salle, students receive far more than an exceptional college-preparatory education. They become part of a supportive community that challenges them academically, nurtures their faith, develops their leadership, and prepares them for success in college and beyond.

Our students graduate with the confidence, experience, and skills needed to thrive in higher education and the professional world.

Through personalized support and high expectations, Cristo Rey students achieve remarkable outcomes, including:

  • 100% college acceptance
  • Millions of dollars in scholarships and financial aid earned each graduating class
  • Four years of professional work experience through the Corporate Work Study Program
  • Ongoing college counseling and support that continues through college graduation

Our graduates are significantly more likely to earn a college degree than their peers, creating opportunities that can transform families for generations.

A Community School That Works

Cristo Rey De La Salle offers a unique educational model that combines rigorous academics with real-world professional experience.Right here in the Fruitvale district of Oakland. Our students come from the local neighborhoods and schools. Many of their families live and work here.

Through our nationally recognized Corporate Work Study Program, students work one day each week with leading Bay Area companies and organizations. They gain invaluable workplace skills, build professional relationships, and help earn a significant portion of the cost of their education.

This innovative approach allows students to graduate with both a college-preparatory education and meaningful professional experience before they even begin college.

Why Your Support Matters

The cost of educating a Cristo Rey student is approximately $20,000 each year.

While the Corporate Work Study Program covers a significant portion of that cost, philanthropy bridges the remaining gap, making a Cristo Rey education accessible to every admitted student regardless of financial need.

The Partners in Possibility Freshman Scholarship Campaign raises the resources needed to provide:

  • A rigorous college-preparatory curriculum
  • Individualized academic support
  • Faith-based education rooted in Lasallian values
  • College counseling beginning in ninth grade
  • Career readiness and leadership development
  • Student wellness and wraparound services
  • Opportunities that prepare students for college, careers, and lives of purpose

Hear It From Them

Valeria’s Story: Finding Community, Confidence, and Purpose at Cristo Rey

When Valeria arrived at Cristo Rey De La Salle as a freshman, she was looking for more than just a school. She wanted a place where she would be known, supported, and challenged—a community where she would feel like more than “just another student.”

That is exactly what she found.

Valeria chose Cristo Rey because of the welcoming environment she heard about from neighbors and the strong sense of community rooted in the Cristo Rey Network model. From her first days on campus, teachers including Mr. Valencia, Ms. Sanding, Mr. Jones, Mr. Sirriani, and Mr. Barragan made her feel seen, encouraged her to aim high, and reminded her that she belonged.

“People don’t always know each other at first, but Summer Bridge really helped us connect.”

The Summer Bridge program became an important part of Valeria’s transition to high school, helping her build friendships and feel connected before the school year even began. Living on 90th Avenue and commuting to school each day with her mother, those early relationships helped Cristo Rey quickly become a place she could call home.

Today, Valeria is completing her freshman year with an outstanding 4.0 GPA and has already distinguished herself as a scholar and leader. She has earned awards in Theology, Biology, Social Science, and the Critical Lasallian Award. She has also stepped into leadership through the Associated Student Body, proudly participating in the inauguration ceremony and taking the oath to serve her school community.

But Valeria’s growth extends far beyond the classroom.

Through Cristo Rey’s Corporate Work Study Program, Valeria embraced the challenge of entering the professional world as a freshman. Her placement at the Alameda County Community Food Bank pushed her outside of her comfort zone while helping her develop confidence, professionalism, and a deeper understanding of service. The experience opened her eyes to the challenges facing communities and strengthened her desire to make a difference.

Those experiences are already shaping Valeria’s future goals. She is exploring careers in psychology and social services, inspired by her growing passion for mental health advocacy. Through her Ethnic Studies coursework, she has examined challenges affecting young people today—including anxiety, stress, bullying, the impact of social media, and the need for stronger support systems for students with IEPs and mental health needs.

Valeria hopes to help create spaces where conversations about mental health are normalized and where students feel supported, understood, and never alone.

Behind Valeria’s success is a family who believes deeply in the power of education. Her parents, Ofelia and Horacio, work hard in social services and industrial laundry jobs because they want their children to have opportunities they did not always have. Alongside her brother Emmanuel, Valeria treasures time with family and stays connected to her roots and traditions through visits with relatives in Mexico.

For Valeria, Cristo Rey is more than a high school.

It is a community that believes in her potential, challenges her to grow, and gives her the tools to build the future she imagines.

“Cristo Rey has shown me that I can do more than I thought I could. I have people here who believe in me and support me.”
