Our student associates began their corporate work experiences this month. It is a delight for me to pay attention to the response of our students to their work days, and how they are just beginning to incorporate the experience into their self-understanding.
“We detect rather than invent our missions in life.” This short phrase –by Viktor Frankl, psychologist, Holocaust survivor, and author of Man’s Search for Meaning [sic]—offers a key to unlocking our mission and method at Cristo Rey De La Salle. We provide learning experiences, work experiences, and exposure to contexts and communities beyond those which our students (and educators and corporate partners) are accustomed. Together we learn and practice the skills of paying attention to God’s gentle, almost imperceptible action in our lives as we (youth and adults) “detect” and discover the outlines of meaning and purpose in our lives.
It is a remarkable honor and privilege for us to witness this happening every day. If you haven’t visited and seen it with your own eyes yet, come join us on this journey to transform lives through education. If you have, I invite you to consider how you might deepen your attention and participation on this journey.
