As a Chicano East Oakland native, I am thrilled to be working within my home community and to have the opportunity to connect with the Cristo Rey staff, students, and their families. With my position as Client Relations Associate, I look forward to encouraging and empowering our students to become independent, young professionals equipped with the tools for success in the corporate world and in higher education. I am a recent University of San Diego Class of 2019 graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology with a concentration in Social Justice and a minor in Ethnic Studies. I speak three languages: English, French, and Spanish – the latter being my native tongue. Neither of my parents were able complete their high school education and thus came to the United States for work initially as undocumented migrants – making me the first in my family to not only complete high school but also attend and graduate from a 4 year university. Fortunately, my father has since become a US citizen and my mother a legal resident; as for myself, I am blessed to have dual citizenship in Mexico and in the United States. For these reasons, education has been a huge motivator pushing me towards success. Furthermore, education has also served as the key to my self-liberation and self-empowerment. Due to this, I am passionate about and dedicated to strengthening the Cristo Rey Mustang community ‘por que un pueblo unido, jamás será vencido.’
As I learned from my colleague Mr. Gutierrez: ‘Success is a series of small wins.’ And as I learned from Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanx de Aztlán, every day brings forth a new challenge so it is important to remember that even with battles that are lost or won, la unión hace la fuerza y la lucha sigue.
